Cricket

Cricket was his first sporting love.

He played in the Fettes XI for four years and was captain for two.

In 1956, he became the first from a Scottish school to play in the Public Schools XI against the Combined Services at Lord’s, opened the innings in 1957 for Buckinghamshire in the Minor Counties Championship, and, in 1958, was selected to play for Cambridge against Lancashire.

At Fettes, he also packed down in the second row of an unbeaten 1 st XV that subsequently produced three Scottish Internationals.
